Ben Gibbard and Jay Farrar (words by Jack Kerouac) - California Zephyr

This song is from the soundtrack of One Fast Move or I’m Gone: Kerouac’s Big Sur, a documentary about the period of time in Kerouac’s life when his alcoholism began to spiral out of control and he began spending time at a cabin in Big Sur in an (ultimately failed) attempt to dry himself out. It was during that time that he wrote the book Big Sur.

I’m posting this song for a number of reasons.

Like every other guy who dresses like I do, I love me a saccharine sweet acoustic Ben Gibbard song.

But more importantly, I was obsessed with Kerouac when I was 17. (Yes, I realize this is not unique.) I was a naïve, skinny kid from a crappy little town in Pennsylvania. Delaware was the furthest I had ever been from home and that was on a family vacation when I was little. In high school, I used to fall asleep at night to cd’s of Kerouac’s spoken word recordings. On the Road was probably one of the main reasons I skipped my graduation to climb aboard a bus with a one-way ticket to California. Which means it was one of the main reasons I got hustled for $20 by a one-legged man before I even hit the Mississippi on that 72-hour bus ride (not the last 72-hour bus ride I’ve been on, if you can believe it). It also means that book might be one of the reasons I’ve ended up doing some of the most interesting crap that I’ve done in my life.

During those two years or so that I spent traveling around, I crossed the country on the California Zephyr twice. This might be kind of a cheesy song, but I’ll tell you what—when I was a 17 year old kid, sitting in the snack car of the California Zephyr long after it was closed for the night, scribbling in my journal and sipping from a big, steaming mug of instant coffee while the desert—the fucking desert—slid past the window, I felt transcontinental.

Listen up, St. Louis! (And everyone else!)

My friend Stephie is putting on a benefit concert for her father. If you live in the St. Louis area, you should definitely make plans to attend. It’s going to be off the hook. If you don’t live in the area, you should consider hitting that paypal link below and ponying up a little scratch for her old man. Stephie is one of the sweetest girls in the whole world. Don’t believe me? Please see the video below.

I know, right? So anyway, pertinent details below:

Benefit Concert and Raffle at Off Broadway, featuring Bill Michalski, Kevin Buckley, and The Takedown. The money raised during this event will help my mom purchase expensive equipment such as lifts, prosthetics, and a hospital bed for my dad.

As many of you know, my father has had 5 major operations in the past year, including two leg amputations and a triple bypass.

My dad would love to come home, and this equipment will make it so much easier for my 66-year-old mother take care of him. Every penny will make a world of difference.

NOTE: this is a SURPRISE for my mom, so please don’t mention it to her!

Several out-of-town friends have asked how they can donate (and wow, thank you so much!). Below is a paypal link:

“In June 1982, Columbia Helicopters was hired by Sohio to participate in a test on Alaska’s North Slope. The purpose of this test was to evaluate the ability of a helicopter—the Boeing Vertol 107-II - to tow a fully-loaded hover barge over water, snow and ice.”

1. That helicopter is not in the process of crashing.  2. Hover barge!

From Mark.

Holy crap that’s awesome.

Freelance Whales - Generator First Floor.

Oh you just wait. They’re the next big thing. In the meantime oh my goodness this song makes me tingly.

(I know it starts with some silence and a moment of white noise, but push through it. Worth it, I promise.)

I love this band. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to drive back to the Cracker Barrel gift shop so I can pick up that glockenspiel.
